Seattle, WA (October 5, 2023) - The issues affecting Black trans communities are Black issues. We are your siblings, sisters, brother, aunties, uncles, cousins, extended family, and chosen family. We are your family, too.

On Friday, October 6, 2023, Lavender Rights Project will launch a public service announcement and campaign focused on amplifying the lived experiences of Black trans women and femmes as a part of the larger Black experience and why it is essential that we the greater Black family work together for the safety, health and care for us all.

Mahkyra Gaines (they/them), the lead developer and creative director for the PSA, shares, “All Black families deserve joy, safety, and liberation - what we are doing with this PSA is sparking a revolution of love at the dinner table inside homes of all in our community. We want to uproot the patriarchy, transmisogyny, and heteronormativity keeping us from collectively organizing against oppressive legislation, relationships and societal structures impacting our loved one's health and well-being.”

As a family, we aren’t demanding perfection. In fact, Black trans community expects imperfection as we navigate injustices in a profoundly imperfect society. All we are asking for right now is your support by simply showing up, even if you don’t understand. Blackness is beautiful, no matter what form it comes in. Every one of us brings an inherent value to our shared world, and none of us lives in a silo. So even if we think one person’s issues don’t impact our separate lives, it will impact our collective futures.
