What We Do

Lavender Rights Project (LRP) advances a more just and equitable society by providing low-cost civil legal services and community programming centered in values of social justice for trans and queer low-income people and other marginalized communities.

Our services and initiatives generally fall under the following categories:

Legal Areas of Practice

We offer free and low-cost front-line representation and civil legal services in the areas of anti-discrimination, wills and estate management, family law, dependency, adoptions, and all trans / transition-related legal matters.

By providing legal aid directed toward specific queer and trans needs in a culturally-conscious manner, our services result in building community resiliency, defending the rights of and increasing the legal support for these uniquely marginalized populations.

We actively refute the notion that scarcity of resources should pit like-minded organizations against one another and instead aim to utilize and uplift organizations that offer various services and opportunities for our overlapping and interconnected communities. We have developed strong referral and resource partners to help triage intake for local trans and queer legal needs and streamline effective and successful access for trans and queer people to culturally competent legal service providers.

For broader community-based and policy level changes, we partner with numerous organizations to develop or join coalitions to further societal-level trans and queer liberation. If you are interested in collaborating with the Lavender Rights Project, email us at info@lavenderrightsproject.org

Mediation is when a neutral party helps people negotiate a resolution and is beneficial as it maintains the power of decision-making in the parties instead of a Judge or Jury. Mediation decreases litigation costs significantly, and most parties leave more satisfied after a mediation than litigation because they have participated in the negotiation, advocated for themselves, and worked to a common resolution.

The Lavender Rights Project provides respectful, intentional, and conscious mediation in family law issues, civil rights, and employment discrimination.

Know Your Rights & Information Clinics

Our community programs encourage the centering of civil rights knowledge and power to be held in community instead of being centralized in the hands of those with legal training. Our efforts seek to help trans and queer people lift themselves up with knowledge, practice, and know-how so that they may experience the empowerment and dignity of leading the fight for their own personal civil rights.

Our work aims to undermine and shift the power dynamics controlling the navigation of queer and trans rights and instead re-center queer and trans people's needs, voices, experiences, and strengths. We seek to return stability, resiliency, and power to vulnerable communities.
